Barcelona Women vs Chelsea Women Preview

Camp Nou empty

The 2nd Leg of the UEFA Women’s Champions League Semi-Final takes place at Camp Nou on Thursday. Barcelona are in a strong position to make a third straight Final after winning the 1st Leg in London last weekend.

There was just one goal in a competitive game at Stamford Bridge but it came early with Caroline Graham Hansen giving the Catalans the lead in the sixth minute. It was another pretty impressive performance overall from Barcelona against strong opposition and they’ll be relishing the opportunity to play in front of another big crowd at Camp Nou this week.

Coach Jonatan Giráldez will be hoping there are parallels with the last round where his side won a tough Quarter Final 1st Leg away to Roma 1-0 before hammering the Italians 5-1 back on home soil. The expectation is that this is going to be a celebratory week for Barça who know they just need to beat lowly Sporting Huelva at home on Sunday to clinch the league title but it’s June 3rd in Eindhoven that they’ll really have their eyes on with Arsenal or Wolfsburg awaiting the winners of this tie in the Final.

For all their dominance and the high standards they’ve set in recent years, Barcelona have only one UEFA Women’s Champions League to their name at this point. They’re clearly very hungry to add to that tally in an era when they are widely perceived to have the strongest feminine set-up and best squad in Europe.

Chelsea have set the standard in England in recent years, winning the Women’s Super League three times in a row. However their only Champions League Final appearance came in 2021 when they were humbled by a brilliant Barcelona.

Revenge was firmly on their minds this term but Emma Hayes would have known what a steep challenge this tie was going to present. Chelsea are going strong in the WSL again, trailing leaders Manchester United by 4 points but crucially with 2 games in hand. They also have an FA Cup Final to look forward to which will also become a big focus, should they fail to turn this tie around.

Score Prediction: Barcelona 3-1 Chelsea (Aggregate: 4-1)

While it was closer than the 2021 Final, Barcelona still carried an air of superiority in the 1st Leg. With home advantage and another big Camp Nou crowd behind them, they look capable of comfortably sealing a place in a third straight Final.
