Bayer Leverkusen’s Managing Director Simon Rolfes has confirmed that the Bundesliga club are in talks to extend the contract of Nadiem Amiri beyond 2024.

Amiri (26) almost had no future at the club and nearly departed in the summer under Gerardo Seoane after spending the end of last season on loan at Italian side Genoa. But since the appointment of Xabi Alonso, Amiri has become an important player in the squad, playing 22 games under the Spaniard.

“We’re in talks,” said Rolfes, who praises Amiri’s “flexibility and fire.” The 26-year-old missed Bayer Leverkusen’s 0-0 draw at Union Berlin on Saturday afternoon after accumulating five yellow cards but will return for the Rheinderby against FC Köln on Friday. Another player that B04 potential have returning for the derby is Exequiel Palacios.

Whilst Amiri is in discussions to sign an extension, the same can’t be said for Kerem Demirbay who arrived at the same time as Amiri, both coming from Hoffenheim. Demirbay has played 33 games across all competitions for Leverkusen this season but isn’t expected to extend his contract.
