Almeria vs Elche Preview

Almeria and Elche meet on Tuesday in a game that could see the visitors relegated to the Segunda Division. Anything less than a win will guarantee that Elche are in the second tier next term, although we have known that would be the case for several months in truth.
This is also a huge game for Almeria. Rubi’s team selection away to Real Madrid at the weekend strongly suggested that this match was being prioritised. The likes of Lucas Robertone and Luis Suarez were left on the bench, just three days after a brace from Suarez had sealed a first away win of the campaign in a key relegation six pointer against Getafe.
These kinds of fixtures are where Almeria have excelled this term though. They’ve consistently beaten the teams around them in the table at the Power Horse Stadium and have won 7 of their 8 home games so far against teams not currently ranked in the top 8 of LaLiga. With Real Valladolid and Mallorca the other sides still to visit, Almeria will be targeting at least 7 points from their remaining home fixtures which would push them onto 40 points overall, a figure which may be enough to keep them in the league.
This fixture suddenly feels a bit trickier than it might have been though after Elche unexpectedly ran riot at the weekend at home to Rayo Vallecano. With just two wins all season and having lost every game under the recently appointed Sebastián Beccacece, everything suddenly clicked with four goals in 30 minutes seeing off a Rayo side that had beaten leaders Barcelona only a few days previously.
While it’s true that their opponents were reduced to 10 men in just the 27th minute, it was still a day to remember for Elche fans and their players, all of whom have endured a miserable season. Regardless of the result here, they could still be relegated this week by other results, but Beccacece will be hoping his team can use their weekend win as something of a building block for the remainder of the campaign.

Score Prediction: Almeria 3-1 Elche
Elche suddenly showed a bit of quality and kept a very rare clean sheet at the weekend but the result was very much out of sync with the rest of their season. Almeria’s key men should be relatively fresh after a weekend rest and they are so strong in these kinds of fixtures at home, that you’d expect Rubi’s side to claim an important win here and relegate Elche in the process.
