Atletico Madrid vs Cadiz Preview

Atletico Madrid stadium

Atletico Madrid are back at the Civitas Metropolitano on Wednesday for a showdown with Cadiz. The visitors are fighting for their lives and would see any result as a huge bonus here against Diego Simeone’s in-form side.

Right now, Atletico Madrid are not just winning football matches but also playing a more entertaining brand of football than we’ve been used to during the past decade. While there are still the hallmarks of a hard-working Simeone side, there has been a willingness to throw caution to the wind with their wing-backs getting into lots of advanced positions while Antoine Griezmann has continued to excel.

It was right wing-back Nahuel Molina that started the scoring in the 5-2 win at Real Valladolid at the weekend. His season has typified that of Atleti in general with a difficult start, followed by a strong second half of a campaign which saw Molina highlight his talents in Argentina’s successful World Cup.

Cadiz were also very slow out of the blocks in LaLiga 2022/23 and they looked certainties for relegation after just five games. However the board stuck with Sergio and once again the former Real Valladolid boss has guided Cadiz to a position where they’ve a really good chance of retaining their top flight status for another year.

Those odds improved considerably at the weekend as they won their relegation six-pointer against Valencia. Goals from Gonzalo Escalante and Sergi Guardiola set them up for a vital three points which pushed the Andalusian side all the way up to 14th in the table on 35 points. They still have some winnable fixtures too, including a final day trip to bottom club Elche, so this will feel like a free hit for Cadiz with no expectation on them to get a result.

Team News & Possible Lineups

Atletico Madrid

INJURED Reinildo, Savic, Llorente
DOUBTFUL Oblak
BANNED

Possible XI: Grbic – Hermoso, Gimenez, Witsel – Carrasco, Koke, De Paul, Lemar, Molina – Morata, Griezmann (3-5-2)

Coach: Diego Simeone

Cadiz

INJURED Garrido, Zaldua, Ocampo, Cala, Chust, Roger Marti
DOUBTFUL
BANNED Sobrino, Luis Hernandez, San Emeterio

Possible XI: Ledesma – Espino, Mere, Fali, Iza Carcelen – Bongonda, Escalante, Alcaraz, Alejo – Ramos, Guardiola (4-4-2)

Coach: Sergio

Score Prediction: Atletico Madrid 4-1 Cadiz

This may be one match too many for these Cadiz players, many of whom have had to soldier on through this busy period due to an extensive injury crisis that has made rotation difficult. With three players suspended here, they really are very limited by selection issues and it should be a comfortable night for the home team.
