Following AS Monaco’s heavy 4-0 defeat at home to Montpellier on Sunday, a crisis meeting was called at the club’s performance centre in La Turbie on Monday, according to Nice-Matin.
Monaco’s 4-0 defeat at the hands of lower-mid-table Montpellier came after a 3-0 humiliation against RC Lens a week earlier. Les Monégasques have gone from looking to reach the Ligue 1 podium to looking over their shoulder, with their fourth place now in danger.
Following the defeat, Clement said that his players should “look in the mirror,” whilst also saying that the club’s form could harm the chances of some players getting a move away this summer. “If we continue like this, it will be difficult for them to get the good transfers, that some of them probably already have in mind.”
A meeting was therefore called on Monday and was attended by players and staff – including sporting director Paul Mitchell – alike. Whilst no players will be isolated from the squad following the result, the Belgian coach was extremely unhappy with the performances of some of his key figures, such as Caio Henrique, Axel Disasi, Youssouf Fofana and even Guillermo Maripán, who was struggling with a muscular injury going into the match.
Whilst Clement’s job isn’t in immediate threat, and he will likely continue until the end of the season, a reflection will take place. The Belgian coach’s contract runs until 2024.
