Real Madrid vs Osasuna Preview

The Copa del Rey final takes place this weekend at La Cartuja in Sevilla as Real Madrid take on Osasuna. LaLiga will be put on hold for both sides, who will both be taking part in their first domestic cup final in years.

Real Madrid made the Final after stunning rivals FC Barcelona 4-0 at Camp Nou after trailing from the first leg 1-0. Karim Benzema scored a hat-trick in a dominant display for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, who will play their first Copa del Rey final since 2014, when Los Blancos also beat Barcelona in Ancelotti’s first spell in charge.

Real Madrid’s record in the Copa del Rey is nothing short of disappointing, especially when the amount of Champions League titles that the club has won in recent years is taken into consideration. Los Blancos have only won the title twice since the start of the century, and have fallen to teams at the lower end of LaLiga and even teams of lower divisions in recent seasons. Saturday will prove to be an opportunity to put these results behind them and regain the trophy.

Although LaLiga is not currently the priority for the capital side, conceding eight goals in their past three outings is not a great look and they surely cannot afford to be as open at the back in this Final.

Their opponents in this match made the Final after defeating Athletic Club in the Semis. Jagoba Arrasate’s side shaded the first leg with a 1-0 victory and the second leg went to Extra Time after Athletic equalised only for Pablo Ibañez to strike home an excellent volleyed finish to take Osasuna to Cartuja.

This match will be only Osasuna’s second Copa Del Rey Final in their history, with the Pamplona club losing to Real Betis in the 2005 edition of the competition. History will be made if Arrasate’s side can pick up victory on Saturday, as it will serve as Osasuna’s first ever major trophy (outside of winning lower divisions), although it will be a huge task to topple the nineteen times winners.

Cup Final Squads

Score Prediction: Real Madrid 2-1 Osasuna

Real Madrid are the clear favourites in this match in terms of history, however Osasuna know how to compete against the bigger sides and have proven difficult opponents for Los Blancos in recent meetings. Furthermore, cup finals can prove to be one-off matches in which anything can happen. We edge Real Madrid to lift the trophy, but it would not be a huge shock to see Osasuna win the match and create history.
