Milan winger is set to renew his contract with the club until 2028 with a significant improvement in salary and release clause. Talks between the two parties have been ongoing for almost a year, with Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain both closely linked with the player in recent months.
La Gazzetta dello Sport report that a renewal is now all but complete, with just an official announcement pending. A major sticking point had been payment of €22m owed to Leao’s previous club, Sporting Lisbon, in relation to the mutually agreed contract termination in 2018.
Gazzetta claim that Sporting have sent a ‘signal’ to confirm that that the transfer of these funds has now been agreed with Ligue 1 side Lille, who Leao joined before arriving at Milan.
The report outlines how Leao’s will to remain with the Rossoneri has been decisive throughout the whole process. The 23-year-old is set to receive a €1.5m pay increase, taking his new salary to €7m a season, plus up to €2m in bonuses as part of the new deal. Included in the contract is a revised release clause that now stands at €170m.
Leao has once again been fundamental for Milan this season, scoring 13 goals in 44 appearances so far in all competitions.
