Mallorca vs Cadiz Preview

Friday’s action comes from the Balearic Islands where Mallorca and Cadiz meet. Both sides survived on the final weekend last season and it could go to the wire again for the visitors this term.

Mallorca should avoid such a dramatic end to the campaign this time around. They have 41 points and while that’s not absolutely guaranteed to be enough, they are almost at the point where they can start planning for another season in the top flight. A win here would effectively guarantee that.

They came very close to doing that in their last home game as they led Athletic 1-0 heading deep into Stoppage Time. However a 96th minute penalty allowed the Basques to leave with a point and leaves Javier Aguirre’s side with a bit more work to do. They were narrowly beaten at Girona last time out but will fancy their chances of bouncing back with an 8th home win of the season here.

That won’t be easy though against a Cadiz side that is fighting for their lives. While at times they look a limited team, every time you write off Sergio’s side, they tend to respond with a big result and with some favourable fixtures to come, they are one of the sides at the bottom who are best placed to beat the drop.

A victory here would be a massive boost to their chances of playing top flight football and we should see a much stronger performance than in their last match – a 5-1 defeat to Atletico Madrid. They were dealing with a number of injury issues at the end of a really busy period that saw them win a key six-pointer against Valencia. The break will have done them some good and Cadiz should be in a position to field a stronger eleven here.

Team News & Possible Lineups

Mallorca

INJURED Nastasic, Giovanni, Augustinsson
DOUBTFUL
BANNED Raillo

Possible XI: Rajkovic – Copete, Hadzikadunic, Valjent – Costa, Galaretta, Morlanes, Maffeo – Dani Rodriguez, Kang-in – Muriqi (3-4-2-1)

Coach: Javier Aguirre

Cadiz

INJURED Garrido, Zaldua, Ocampo, Cala, Chust, Roger Marti, Alex Fernandez
DOUBTFUL
BANNED

Possible XI: Ledesma – Espino, Fali, Luis Hernandez, Iza Carcelen – Sobrino, Escalante, Alcaraz, Bongonda – Ramos, Guardiola (4-4-2)

Coach: Sergio

Score Prediction: Mallorca 1-1 Cadiz

This is likely to be a competitive game and Mallorca do sometimes fall short in matches where they are favourites, highlighted by their ability to take just one point off rock bottom Elche this season. Cadiz are capable of coming here and making life tough for their opponents and they may have enough to claim a solid point.
