Marseille’s Igor Tudor after loss at Lille: “We weren’t good enough to win the game.”

Olympique de Marseille beat lost 2-1 away to Lille OSC on Saturday night at Stade Pierre-Mauroy. Les Phocéens would have leapfrogged second-placed Lens had they won against Les Dogues.

The visitors opened the scoring courtesy of Jonathan Clauss. However, Lille turned the game on its head thanks to a penalty from Jonathan David and a towering header from Jonathan Bamba. Lens’ victory over FC Lorient gives them a five-point lead over Les Phocéens with just two games of the season remaining. A third-place finish would likely be considered a slight disappointment given Marseille’s season until now. “Is second place unattainable?” asked Igor Tudor during his post-game press conference, attended by Foot Mercato. “It looks like it, but we’ll see. We’re not pleased with the result.“

Marseille were outplayed in the second half, allowing Lille to mount a comeback, but Les Phocéens were the architects of their own demise, conceding an avoidable penalty at the start of the second half. “I’m sorry for my players, we tried and we weren’t good enough to win the game“, the Croatian manager added. Marseille will host Brest and travel to Ajaccio for their final games of the season. Les Phocéens are on course to finish third and qualify for the Champions League qualifying rounds.
