In the wake of Paris Saint-Germain’s 2-1 victory over AJ Auxerre, captain Marquinhos (29) said the club have “a hand on the trophy.”
Had results gone their way this weekend, PSG could have wrapped up successive Ligue 1 titles this weekend. Whilst Olympique de Marseille lost, seeing them mathematically slip out of contention, RC Lens beat FC Lorient, despite falling behind early on.
That meant that Franck Haise’s side were back within three points of Les Parisiens. However, a Kylian Mbappé (24) brace saw PSG over the line against relegation-threatened Auxerre. It was a nervy victory for PSG, but one that brings them within one point of the title. Only a PSG defeat and a Lens victory would take the title race to the final day, although Les Parisiens’ vastly superior goal difference means that the title is all but sealed.
With just two games to go and a six-point gap to Lens, Marquinhos, who signed a contract extension until 2028 this week, assessed that PSG now “have a hand on the trophy.”
“It was a key match, a decisive match. We aren’t champions yet, but we have a hand on the trophy already. We just need one match to take it,” said the PSG captain in a post-match interview with Amazon Prime Video Sport.
