Elche vs Sevilla Preview

Wednesday’s action in Spain sees five matches with this clash between Elche and Sevilla one of the early kick-offs. The visitors will be targeting three points in their pursuit of a European place, but might just find Elche a tougher nut to crack than was the case for most of this season.
Sebastián Beccacece deserves credit for getting a response from a team that basically felt like a lost cause. They moved onto 20 points with a draw at Getafe at the weekend and 7 of those have come in the space of the last 4 matches. That period has also witnessed half of their victories in LaLiga 2022/23 and easily two of their best performances with Rayo Vallecano and Atletico Madrid dispatched on home soil.
Elche fans are finally starting to enjoy some of the things they are seeing from their team and their recent showings do bode well for their chances of competing for promotion next year. It’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for the likes of Lucas Boye, their scorer at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez, who may attract interest in the summer despite a far from prolific campaign in front of goal.
As for Sevilla, this game is significant from the perspective of their chances of finishing 7th. They no longer have a realistic shot of anything more than that after being held to a frustrating draw by Real Betis in the Seville derby last time out. Whether Sevilla finish 7th or not would end up being an irrelevance should they beat Roma in next week’s Europa League Final.
That would bring with it Champions League rather than Conference League qualification, but Sevilla boss José Luis Mendilibar will still want as many points as possible from the two league games before the trip to Budapest. He left a number of regular starters out of the derby having been taken to Extra Time by Juventus only three days earlier, but we should see a stronger eleven for this game.

Elche’s recent form has been much improved and they are putting together strong performances as well as positive results. This won’t be easy for Sevilla but the visitors are on a roll and have some important players to bring into their starting eleven which should help them claim another win as they close in on 7th place.
