Mallorca vs Valencia Preview

Mallorca LaLiga stadium

Mallorca and Valencia clash in Palma on Thursday with the visitors fresh from a vital weekend win which pushed them onto 40 points. Victory here too would banish any remaining relegation worries for Los Che.

Their hosts are 4 points better off and already in a position where they can start planning for another season in the top flight. Javier Aguirre will be happy with his team’s efforts this season but he wouldn’t have been too impressed with what he saw at the weekend as Mallorca crashed to a 3-0 defeat at lowly Almeria. It’s perhaps natural that they may drop off slightly with survival certain but they’ll be hoping for a better showing here.

Son Moix has been one of the toughest grounds for visiting teams to play at this season. While rarely brilliant, Mallorca have been really tough to break down and have found a way to consistently churn out results in front of their own fans. They’ve lost just 1 of their last 12 at home in LaLiga and bizarrely that defeat came at the hands of rock bottom Elche.

Valencia will be hoping they can replicate the feat of their regional neighbours. If they can do that, it will be mission complete for Ruben Baraja who has defied the doubters to do a good job of guiding Los Che towards safety from a position of real peril. They’ve ridden their luck at times and required some brilliant saves from Giorgi Mamardashvili to see off Real Madrid on Sunday at Mestalla.

That game was massively overshadowed by the racist taunts that were directed at Vini Junior before and during the match. It certainly soured what should have been a celebratory occasion for Valencia who have since promised to punish the offenders, but also strongly fought back against accusations that the whole stadium was abusing Vini in a racist manner.

Youngster Diego Lopez scored the game’s only goal to make it back-to-back wins that leave Valencia on 40 points, although there could still be tension surrounding their weekend home game against fellow strugglers Espanyol if they can’t get anything here.

Team News & Possible Lineups

Mallorca

INJURED Nastasic, Augustinsson
DOUBTFUL Jaume, Morlanes, Raillo, Ruiz de Galaretta
BANNED

Possible XI: Rajkovic – Copete, Raillo, Valjent – Maffeo, Galaretta, Baba, Antonio – Grenier, Kang-in – Muriqi (3-4-2-1)

Coach: Javier Aguirre

Valencia

INJURED Andre
DOUBTFUL
BANNED Musah, Comert

Possible XI: Mamardashvili – Gaya, Diakhaby, Gabriel, Correia – Almeida, Nico, Guerra – Lino, Cavani, Kluivert (4-3-3)

Coach: Ruben Baraja

Score Prediction: Mallorca 0-0 Valencia

Valencia have been better defensively in recent weeks and when they have been opened up, Mamardashvili has continued to excel in goal. This is likely to be a tight game with few opportunities given the visitors may well see a point as a decent result while Mallorca may struggle to match the kind of intensity and urgency that had been evident in other home games before their survival was secured.
