Manchester United’s best and worst players in Chelsea demolition

Manchester United will go into the final game of the Premier League season at the weekend knowing that a place in the 2023/24 Champions League is already secured.

That is courtesy of Thursday night’s ultimately very comfortable 4-1 thrashing of a very poor Chelsea side at Old Trafford. United rode their luck at times in the first half when the visitors were failing to make the most of opportunities to score, but Erik ten Hag’s team turned it on in the second 45.

Casemiro 8/10

Casemiro had already found the net against Chelsea in the reverse Premier League fixture at Stamford Bridge, rescuing a point with a stoppage time header that was perhaps one of the first moments that fans realised just how good a signing he was.

The Brazilian may be known for his defensive midfield work, but he has shown great attacking quality on so many occasions this season and this game was no exception. It was another header to give United the early lead, followed by a wonderful no-look pass to make the second. Overall, he bossed it.

Honourable mention

Bruno Fernandes 8/10

He has had his fair share of criticism in the past, but the United skipper seems incapable of having a bad game at Old Trafford at the moment. Bruno Fernandes wasn’t all over the game in the first half, but he came to play in the seocnd half and had a decisive role, from hitting the woodwork, to winning and scoring the penalty, he was a real thorn in Chelsea’s side.

Luke Shaw 6/10

Worst player is a harsh term because nobody in a red shirt had a bad game – that all belonged to those wearing blue on the night. Luke Shaw only played half the match and it was the 45 minutes where, on balance, Chelsea were probably making better openings.

Dishonourable mention

Fred 6/10

Fred wasn’t really on the pitch long enough to do anything of note, other than become involved in some pushing and shoving with Chelsea players after United had gone 3-0 up from the spot.
