Niclas Füllkrug could yet remain at Werder Bremen

SportBild are reporting that Werder Bremen and German international striker Niclas Füllkrug could be set to extend his stay at Werder Bremen.

Füllkrug is currently contracted to Bremen until the summer of 2025, but as of July 1st, the Bremen striker will have to take a 15% salary reduction. Füllkrug’s demands would be to extend his current deal to 2026 with a significantly increased salary, which would include a release clause.

The recent signing of Fortuna Düsseldorf striker Dawid Kownacki may have been viewed as a potential replacement for Füllkrug. However, when talking to DeichStube, Bremen’s head of professional football Clemens Fritz claimed that Kownacki was an addition to the existing squad: “When you have that quality in the squad, you want to keep it.”

Füllkrug is the current leading marksman in the Bundesliga with 16 goals so far this campaign. This has put him on course to become the first Bremen player to be crowned as the Bundesliga’s top scorer since Miroslav Klose in the 2005/06 campaign.

Werder would be willing to listen to offers for their star striker, however, their internal valuation of Füllkrug would be around the €20m mark. If they were to agree to Füllkrug’s demands they would have to make significant financial concessions.
