Roma have announced the signing of Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku on a one-year loan deal from Premier League side Chelsea. The 30-year-old had been told to look for a new club after failing to agree a move to Inter, despite spending the last season on loan there. Juventus were rumoured to be interested in Lukaku, but the Giallorossi have now confirmed his arrival via a statement on the club’s official website:
AS Roma is delighted to confirm the loan signing of Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea.
Lukaku, 30, has joined the Giallorossi on a temporary basis until 30 June 2024.
“The welcome I’ve received from this club and its fans has excited me and given me even more motivation to give my all for my new team. As an opponent, I felt the atmosphere of the Stadio Olimpico, and felt the warmth of the Romanisti,” said Lukaku for the first time as a Roma player.
“It’s nice to know I’m a part of it today. I recently got the opportunity to speak with the owners, and I was impressed by their ambition. Now we must work, be humble, and grow game by game. For my part, I can’t wait to be available to my teammates both on and off the pitch.”
Lukaku, a world-renowned centre forward, has 280 goals in 589 games. Besides being a formidable goal scorer, Romelu has provided 93 assists in his career, showcasing his versatility in attack.
He joins Roma after winning the Belgian championship with Anderlecht, the FA Cup and the Club World Cup with Chelsea, and also the Scudetto, Italian Cup, and Italian Super Cup with Inter.
“Knowing that Lukaku has chosen Roma can only bring us great satisfaction. With his arrival, we gain more experience, professionalism, and a drive to win,” commented Tiago Pinto, Roma’s General Manager, Football.
“All our decisions are focused on increasing the squad’s competitiveness, and we continually assess their performances on the pitch. However, it makes us very proud to watch the fans greet Romelu with such excitement.”
Lukaku will wear the No. 90 shirt for the Giallorossi.
