Igor Tudor rejected Monaco approach to replace Philippe Clement out of respect to Marseille

L’Équipe have revealed that Igor Tudor was AS Monaco’s number-one choice to replace Philippe Clement this summer, however, the Croatian rejected the approach out of respect to Olympique de Marseille.

Despite signing a two-year deal with Les Phocéens, Tudor left at the end of his first season, citing “private and professional” reasons for the premature cancellation of his contract. He has since been replaced by Marcelino in the dugout at the Vélodrome.

With his departure announced before the end of the season, Tudor attracted interest this summer, notably from Monaco, who were in the market for a replacement for Clement. Not only did Les Monégasques drop out of the race for the Champions League in the run-in, but they also missed out on European football altogether.

Tudor was the Principality club’s number-one choice to replace the outgoing Belgian manager, according to L’Équipe. However, the Croatian turned down the approach and informed the hierarchy at Marseille that he had turned down the opportunity out of respect for the Phocéen club, who had allowed him to leave early.

Ultimately, Monaco hired Adi Hütter. The Austrian coach has guided Les Monégasques to top spot in Ligue 1 and is currently unbeaten.
