Emiliano Martinez has been named the 2023 Yashin Trophy winner at the Ballon d’Or ceremony for his heroics with Argentina during the 2022 World Cup.

The Aston Villa stopper was a huge presence for La Albiceleste in Qatar late last year, with one save from Randal Kolo Muani in the final proving pivotal before their victory on penalties at Lusail Iconic Stadium.

The French audience in attendance at Theatre du Chatelet in Paris were unimpressed when a video showing that save was played during the ceremony, leaving co-host Didier Drogba needing to soothe boos from the crowd. Martinez’s father came out to join his son for the awarding of the trophy.

Martinez beat Mike Maignan, Ederson, Aaron Ramsdale, Andre Onana, Thibaut Courtois, Yassine Bounou, Brice Samba, Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Dominik Livakovic to the award.

The Argentinian, who also came 15th in the Ballon d’Or rankings, also won The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper Award and World Cup Golden Glove Award in 2022.
