Donnarumma: ‘It could have been given as a penalty’

Italy goalkeeper Gianluigo Donnarumma admits that “reviewing the video, the penalty could have been given” for Ukraine. The Azzurri secured qualification for next summers EURO 2024 competition with a 0-0 draw against Ukraine, but there was late drama as Bryan Cristante looked to have bought down a Ukrainian player in the box.

Speaking in the post-match, Donnarumma admitted that it could have been awarded as a penalty for the opposition:

Do you consider this a starting point?

“It was certainly needed, it was fundamental and we are very happy. It was a difficult, complicated match. They are an excellent team, we knew we had to suffer to bring home qualification for the European Championship. We did it in the best possible way, the whole team was united and compact, just as the coach asked. This gives us great joy, the desire to go to the European Championship and be protagonists.”

What is this group like and what room for growth does it have?

“It has incredible room for growth. The coach is giving us a lot, he’s making us work very well. We just have to train and listen to the coach, I’m sure we’ll go very far.”

It was also your first party as Captain, does it give you a different flavour?

“Yes, I am honoured to represent this team, this group. Wearing this shirt is an honour, it is a privilege. I hope to always honour it to the maximum by always giving everything. All of Italian football deserves it, our fans deserve it. I am truly proud.”

Were you nearby, was there a penalty for Ukraine late on?

“From there I didn’t understand very well, there are situations on the pitch. Then reviewing the images, in my opinion it could have happened. But it’s fine like this, let’s say it’s fine like this. Now we don’t think about it, we think about celebrating and enjoying this hard-fought draw and from big team”.

Have you moved on from the past?

“I don’t have any unfinished business. I always try to give my best, I’m the captain of this team and I have to set an example. I’m proud of what I’ve done and what I’m doing. I’m certainly only thinking about the pitch, to grow, to the team and to give my best. I’m calm about other things.”
